Xavier's 2012 State Championship victory over NFA!

Xavier High School competes in the Southern Connecticut Conference in the Division One West Conference at the LL level. As a member of one of Connecticut's most competitive conferences, Xavier regularly faces the toughest opponents that the state of Connecticut has to offer.

The Falcon's head coach Sean Marinan has been at the helm for the past 11 years, and during his tenure, he has guided his team to a number of impressive seasons--including 10 City of Middletown Championships, six S.C.C. Division I West titles, five playoff berths, and four Class "LL" State Titles; the first championship title was in 2005, the second was in 2010, the third was in 2011, and the fourth was in 2012. At the conclusion of the 2005, 2010 and 2011 championship seasons, the Falcons were unanimously voted as the #1 football team in the state of Connecticut. As a result of his team's unparalleled performance during the 2005 season, Coach Marinan received the "Coach of the Year" honors from the New Haven Register, the Hartford Courant and the CHSCA. In 2011 Coach Marinan received his second CHSCA "Coach of the Year" honor following his team's undefeated 13-0 season and #1 finish in the each of the state's most recognized polls.

Over the years, Xavier has seen a number of their graduating players move on to compete at the division one level; additionally, the Falcons have produced three NFL players. The most recent of those NFL players was Amari Speivey ('06) who was drafted in the beginning of the 3rd round of the NFL draft in the spring of 2010. After graduating from Xavier, Spievey attended Iowa University on a scholarship where he played for three years prior to declaring for the NFL draft. While at Iowa, Spievey was a 2 time Big 10 All-Conference selection. In his first two years as a Detroit Lion, Spievey was a starter at Strong Safety.

Xavier's two other NFL achieving alumni were defensive linemen Phil Murphy ('75) who played for the Los Angeles Rams, and Joe Ferraro ('79) who played for the Denver Broncos. In 1974 Murphy was a member of Xavier's first state champion team. After playing for Xavier, Murphy went on to play for the South Carolina Game Cocks. In 1980, Murphy was selected in the 3rd round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams where he played several years as a defensive lineman. Ferraro was a senior member of the 1978 Xavier team that went undefeated in the regular season but eventually lost in the playoffs to Fairfield Prep. After Xavier, Ferraro attended Boston College where he was a four year varsity letter earner. As a senior, Ferraro was named first team All-New England and he also won the ESPN Vitalis Award for his outstanding play against Texas A&M on September 5, 1981. Ferraro retired from the NFL in 1984 after suffering a knee injury.

At the core of Xavier's coaching philosophy is the goal of instilling in its athletes the desire for: personal challenge, self confidence, academic excellence, individual accountability, and team commitment. It is the belief of Xavier's coaching staff that these virtues are essential to overall success in life. As members of the Xavier High School football team, students can expect to learn lessons that will not only prepare them for the diverse challenges of life, but also shape them to become leaders in the future. To be a member of the Falcon football program, one must be fully committed to personal improvement.
